The sisters of Sigma Kappa support three nationally recognized philanthropic causes. Each semester the Theta Delta`s host a philanthropy event in which other Greek and student organizations, fellow students, University of Delaware faculty, and the local Newark community are invited to participate. In the spring, Sigma Kappa co-hosts Greek Love Duets and in the fall, Sigma Kappa organizes a week long Philanthropy event called Ultra Violet Week. Throughout the week, the Theta Delta sisters promote a fund raiser at Sweet and Sassy Cupcakes, run a community car wash, and finally the week ends with the main event, Dance for a Chance. All of the proceeds from each of these many events are donated to each of our causes which include Gerontology, Alzheimer's Research, and The Maine Sea Coast Mission.
- Gerontology
In 1954 Sigma Kappa became the first national sorority to recognize the need for continued, comprehensive work on the study of aging and the needs of elderly populations. Collegiate and alumnae members throughout the country volunteer their time and talent in support of numerous projects to assist and benefit the elderly. How Theta Delta Helps: Our chapter is extremely involved in the surrounding community. We love to work with the residents of the Rockland Center in Wilmington, Delaware. This is an assisted living nursing home, but the residents truly enjoy the different activities we do with them. Our main event at the Rockland Center is the Senior Prom that we organize in the spring in which there is a DJ for entertainment and dancing, as well as live performers from the University of Delaware. Other activities we do at the center include holiday crafting, baking, and a variety of socials.
- Alzheimer`s Research
In 1984 Sigma Kappa responded to an increasingly critical problem facing older Americans by adding Alzheimer`s Disease research and education to its philanthropy activities. Research grants are made each year to universities and other institutions actively engaged in the fight against Alzheimer`s Disease. Through its partnership with the national Alzheimer’s Association, Sigma Kappas throughout the country, as well as the Sigma Kappa Foundation, raise money for research and to increase awareness. Currently, Sigma Kappa is the second largest contributor to the Alzheimer's Association. How Theta Delta Helps: Every fall our chapter participates in the Alzheimer`s Association`s Memory Walk at the Riverfront in Wilmington, Delaware. We raise thousands of dollars during Ultra Violet Week as well as Greek Love Duets that we donate to this worthy cause.
- The Maine Sea Coast Mission
Since 1918 Sigma Kappa has paid homage to its Maine roots by supporting the activities of the Maine Sea Coast Missionary Society. The Maine Sea Coast Missionary Society delivers critical services to people in need while striving to redress the root causes of those needs. With the help of the 75-foot mission vessel, Sunbeam V, direct programs and services include church and pastoral work, assistance to those in sickness and poverty, financial aid, food banks, recycled clothing shops, crisis intervention, youth programs, and ministries in the field. The Mission serves the islands from mid-coast to Downeast Maine, as well as mainland Hancock and Washington counties. How Theta Delta Helps: In the past, our chapter has decorated beach buckets to be filled with toiletries that are sent to help out the Maine Sea Coast Missionary Society. Additionally, starting this year we will be holding a clothing drive. We are collecting old jackets, hats, scarves and other winter gear to help the residents get through the cold winters with warm clothing. Sigma Kappa shows its support for other chapter's philanthropies as well as participate in other activities in the community. The Theta Delta Sisters support a multicultural sorority on campus by participating in Pie a Pi. All of the proceeds are given to the multicultural sorority's philanthropy. The Theta Delta Sisters also volunteer their time at the Emmaus House which is a half way home for underprivileged families that are getting back on their feet. The sisters play with the young children at the home and we absolutely love it. Giving back to the community as well as raising money for our national philanthropies are huge parts of our sisterhood and we are very proud to support what Sigma Kappa stands for.
